Forget about what's happened;
don't keep going over old history.
Be alert, be present.
I'm about to do something brand-new.

Isaiah 43:18-19a

What is Essential?

The Essence is a community gathering and a way of worship - a vision of the church as community that is organic, relational, participatory, flexible, evolving, and emerging. Such communal worship satisfies a deep-seated existential need within us as human beings, connecting us to each other and to the Source of life. The Essence is also a place where creative art is valued as an expression of life, recognizing that all creativity comes from the Creator.

Why at a pub?

God is not confined to the sanctuary or any other place, and neither is a worshipful community. There is a precedent in the Methodist tradition for having "church" at a pub: John and Charles Wesley, the founders of Methodism, held worship services in bars and taverns across England in the 1700s. So we're just getting back to our roots. Plus, what better place to hang out? Free coffee is provided, or grab a pop and a sandwich downstairs and bring it up.

Won't you join us?

We welcome all into God's fellowship with open hearts, open minds, and open doors. We reach out with compassion to those seeking freedom, justice, and a new life. We are committed to sharing God's love through our relationships, and demonstrating God's love to others. Come as you are and enjoy The Essence gatherings.

Are children welcome?

Children and people of all ages are welcome to join in and experience the Essence community, and childcare is available at Church of the Messiah.  The Essence is a fun, participatory worship with talking, singing, drawing (and occasional group plays or skits), with musical shakers and art supplies (and sometimes clay, water colors or other materials) at every table. So making a little noise (and even crying a bit) would actually add to the personal and meaningful aspect of worship that we seek. When someone cries out (a child OR an adult), it probably means it is time for that person to be listened to, and loved. There really is plenty of activity to engage a child's interest at The Essence, whether they are actively participating in some way, or just soaking in the experience of a friendly, energetic fellowship.

Where is the pub?

The Old Bag of Nails Pub Westerville location is at 24-26 N. State Street, on the southeast corner of State and Main in Uptown Westerville. From I-270 take Rt. 3 ( Westerville Rd./State St. ) north about a mile and a half. Click here for the Google map.

Where is parking?

Free public parking is available behind the pub, across the street behind Graeter's Ice Cream, and one block north in the Messiah lot where the Westerville Farmer's Market is held.

Can we bring food or drink upstairs?

It is a pub, so, yes, you may; however, since it is a participatory worship service, you may find it easier to eat before or after the service. Coffee and water are provided.

Is this for young adults?

The original concept for this worship service was designed for 18-30 year olds, but the essence is appealing to folks outside that age range, so all are welcome. We have people ages 10 to 70 attend.

Do I have to dress up?

No. Wear whatever you're comfortable in. (Shirt and shoes are required.  ...and, obviously, pants/shorts/skirt/dress or kilt.)
